Borderlands 3 - Sanctuary & Cities (General)

A major city in Borderlands 2, and also the staging point of the main story, Sanctuary in Borderlands 3 should have some redefining traits to make it look like a good city to start your adventure in the epic Borderlands 3 experience.

Today's Borderlands 3 Post is about:

  • The City of Sanctuary
  • Other Major Cities

What's Sanctuary?

Sanctuary was the major city of Borderlands 2's main story. In DLC's we had Oasis (Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty), Hunter's Grotto - Lodge (Sir Hammerlock and the Big Game Hunt) and Flamerock Refuge (Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep).

* There were none for Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage, unless you count The Beatdown, but that is not a major city due to having enemies there.

Sanctuary housed several core characters in Borderlands 2, including:
  • Lilith, Mordecai, and Brick (Borderlands 1 Vault Hunters / NPCs in Borderlands 2)
  • Scooter (the vehicle guy, aka Catch-A-Ride)
  • Marcus (The guns guy)
  • Dr. Zed (The medic person)
  • Claptrap
In Borderlands 3
  • At the start of the story, Sanctuary will stay in the air. To get off of Sanctuary you will need a flying vehicle* or take the teleport to Overlook (From Borderlands 2). However, later in the story, you'll have access to familiar regions and new regions alike, none of which will have been announced.
  • Pandora is a remote desolated wasteland, once you acquire the Dahl's Capital Ship (complete Episode One on any difficulty), you'll be able to travel to other planets in search of new heroes, new enemies, more vaults, and better yet... more epic experiences?
What Stays In Borderlands 3?
  • Moxxi's Bar - The traditional slot machines remain there, but reskinned. Also they have the new outcomes (see the Slot Machines post for more information). Also, the traditional music remains there.
  • Marcus's Gun Shop - During the transition between Borderlands 2 & 3, Marcus spent some of his gun money to remodel his place a little bit - and also make it feel more open and spacious and not so bandit-filled.
  • Crimson Raiders HQ - Also from Borderlands 2, except the following:
- The Red Dahl Chest you opened in the side quest "Bearer of Bad News" will not be there anymore, instead it will be replaced by a mini shrine of Roland (since he died) to dedicate to him.
- The hole in the top floor was rebuilt and also contains a room where Lilith, Mordecai and Brick hang around it. In the start of Episode Two, the 3 move to your capital ship.
- Patricia Tannis also still lives there, and also has new technology to do her insane archaeologist theories in Pandora. Later in the story however, she moves to the Dahl Capital Ship.

  • Dr. Zed's office: A little more compact in Borderlands 3, but nevertheless the same look. Also has a small road that leads to his office through the side, identical to Scooter's building, except the door is automated?
  • The hole in the northwest of the Claptrap's location - This is where the Capital Ship will be when you travel to Pandora. During the start of the story this remains an empty space, but as you progress through Episode One, Lilith will order a build of the dock there... you will see at the end of Episode One the docking station for the ship.
  • Scooter's Place: Same thing as before, however, the circle outside of his workshop now has models of his vehicles. One display for each model - these appear as you unlock his vehicles/other vehicle options. There are three displays outside of his - but more in the capital ship that Dahl is giving the Crimson Raiders (at the end of Episode One)
  • Pierce Station: Enter and exit Sanctuary through here via the Fast Travel station. Due to Hyperion's rebirth in Borderlands 3 (a story plot twist), Lilith and Dahl must work together to stop them from overtaking the new planets in an effort to save the galaxy (and give the hunters some great loot)
Why a new ship?
  • First of all, Sanctuary is a mining ship. Besides in Borderlands 3, we learn more about Dahl, and they send you a ship inbound in their hidden factory at Volcano Peak.
  • The new ship is larger then Sanctuary's "ship" and has room for 8 total buildings. When you acquire the ship, you will have the Tier 1 Command Center and Tier 1 Barracks only. As you upgrade your Command Center, you will have access to build up to 6 more buildings in the ship, making a full scale city in the process.
But, does the ship reduce Major City visits, such as Sanctuary?
  • Initially it will not because getting all the buildings and stuff will take a long time to acquire, and you must acquire all the blueprints (which come from Elite Badass Rank Tower Challenges, boss drops, or Moxxi Tickets) and are always purple quality, so the drop rate is not very common at all.
  • The ship only lets you travel to a specific section in new worlds. However, as you upgrade the Travel Station, it will let you fast travel to major cities and back to the ship. This also unlocks new Docking Stations for World 2 & 5 (and other worlds if there are any)
  • Each world has at least 1 docking station:
- World 1 (Pandora): Sanctuary
- World 2 (Natura World): Icebark Island
- World 3 (Athenas): <unknown>
- World 4 (Hermes): <unknown>
- World 5 (Virtual Reality Climax): Watertown
- World 6 (Aquator): <unknown> but will feature a land based city before going underwater
- World 7 (Hephaestus): <unknown> but will feature something related to Torgue

  • The docking station is where the ship docks. In order to go back to other worlds, you must command your ship to travel to the world's docking station (use the Command Center).
  • All fast travels allow you to travel back to your ship (after upgrading the Travel Station to at least Tier 3)
  • Docking stations also contain weapon vendors, Character stations and ammo. Also there is a white chest (hidden) that contains guns.
Other Major Cities:

  • Sanctuary (World 1)
  • Icebark City (World 2)
  • River City (World 2)
  • Cloud's Order (World 3)
  • ??? (World 4)
  • Watertown (World 5)
  • Bahroo Point (World 5)
  • Aquanos City (World 6)
  • ??? (World 7)
There are many more major cities also, but yet to be revealed...

This post is complete. See you in the next post, scheduled for June 17, and it will feature a small amount of the Story, as well as more depths of other things.
